エンドウ豆のお世話

毎朝の窓の掃除のついでに、最近はエンドウ豆のチェックもしています。朝だけでなく、夕方にも見にいっていたりする。そして毎回に見にいって、アブラムシがついていたら潰しています。目についたものは全部退治してしまう。退治していないと、エンドウ豆を全部枯らしてしまうだろうな、と思う。アブラムシだけでなくて、葉のなかに潜ってすんでいるものもいるし、もっとちいさなものもいます。
ちょっと大変だけれど、手間をかけてあげると、緑色のきれいな葉をのばして、白いかわいい花をさかせて、おいしい実をつけてくれます。手間をかけてあげた分、エンドウ豆も育ててくれてありがとう、という感じでこちらの気持ちに答えるように、たくさんの実をつけてくれます。

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has a modest ambition: He just wants to change the world.

グーグルのCEO、エリック･シュミットは控えめな野望を掲げる。ただ世界を変えたいというのである。

That's what he told New Yorker writer Ken Auletta, at an event in San Francisco organized by the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications.

シュミットはニューヨーカーの記者ケン･アウレッタに、シラキュース大学のニューハウス･スクール･オヴ･パブリック･コミュニケーションズがサンフランシスコで企画したイベントで、上記のように話した。

"The goal of the company is not to monetize anything," he said. "The goal is to change the world -- and monetization is a technique to do that."

In a broad conversation covering Microsoft, Yahoo, privacy and government regulation, Schmidt effectively dodged any juicy questions.

Asked about his recusal from iPhone discussions in Apple board meetings (Schmidt has served on Apple's board since August 2006), Schmidt basically said the mobile market was big enough for both companies.

アップルの取締役会（シュミットは２００６年８月からアップルの取締役の一員）で、iPhoneの会議を辞退していることについて聞いたところ、シュミットは携帯のマーケットは両社にとって十分大きいと簡潔に答えた。
